Screens and kids: are they easier to manage in the summer or worse? Maybe both! Let’s face it, we are slackers in the summer about all things, so there is an inevitable slide with screen time. We often rationalize that they are outside more and busy with activities, so maybe they won’t be seeking out a screen as much, but screen time is certainly a part of our summer. Either way, how’s it going for you?

If you are feeling like it’s too much–pull it back! If your screen rules and regs are not working-pivot. You got this.

Here are some tips and as usual, remember to stay flexible, open-minded, and by all means give yourself some grace. It’s your summer, too!!!

✅ Set some boundaries/limits for your kids and screen time. If they are watching too much, scale back when they can watch. Be thoughtful about the limits you set. Asking a child to turn off the TV or give up the phone is hard. They may need you to set the timer and take the phone or turn the tv off. Let them know your expectations ahead of time. All this said, there could still be a big crash out?!

✅ Choose limits and boundaries that work for your family and kids, remembering there is no “one way” to do this. Each family should create rules/structure that works for them. Examples that might make sense for your family:

No screens in the morning or afternoon

No screens at restaurants

No YouTube, except for Saturdays

An hour of screen time once you read

Only movies during the week

✅ If you are trying to do less of the “handing your kiddo a phone” at dinner or church or in the car- try bringing alternatives. Or talk to your partner ahead of time and make a plan. Choose your times carefully, the car trip, airport, or when a babysitter comes could be the time you use the screen time.

✅ Watching shows together is the best! If you find a show you and your child like, try to make the time to watch it together. Trust us, it will be a time to connect and a guaranteed memory you have together!

✅ For older kids who have summer reading, maybe make a deal with them For example, a half hour of reading in exchange for a half hour of show or video games?

✅ Stay flexible and remember, you are in charge. If what you have in place isn’t working, make a change. We often will ask your kiddos what they think is a fair and realistic plan. You never know; they might have a great idea!
